Curriculum overview

Aims

The aim of the department is to ensure all groups of students’ progress and attain beyond their expected targets. The department is very stable and has very experienced teachers who have a very secure subject and curriculum knowledge. Teachers strive to teach at high quality lessons that focus on Teaching and Learning.  Students are taught mathematics in ability sets from year 7 to year 11. This enables the departments teaching to be more focused and directed within similar abilities.

KS3:

Year 7 – Topics Taught

Numbers: Whole numbers and Decimals, Fractions and Percentages, Mental Maths, Written and Calculator Methods, Ratio and Proportions.

Geometry: Measures, Perimeters and Areas, Angles and Shapes, Transformations, Constructions, 3D Shapes

Algebra: Expressions and Formulae, Graphs, Equations

Statistics: Collecting and Representing data, Probability

Functional: Everyday Maths.       

Year 8 – Topics Taught

Method of Assessment at KS3:

At the end of each Chapter the students will have a Test. Three chapter tests will be done every Half term and an average level is given at the end of the Half Term. These tests are designed to monitor progress of all groups of pupils and to inform us of any interventions that may be needed.

At the end of the year pupils will be have an end of year test incorporating all the topics learned over the year. This Test is marked, feedback and Levelled.

Method of Assessment at KS4 (include Exam boards and weightings)

At Key stage 4 students build on the knowledge gained at KS3. Pupils will be assessment every Half term. The grades for the test will be used to track progress of all groups of students against their KS2 levels. Students study one of two level of entry: Foundation or Higher and are examined at the end of year 11 by the Exam Board Edexcel (Mathematics A Syllabus 1MA0).  This consist of two papers (Paper 1: Non Calculator and Paper 2: Calculator). Each paper is 1 hour 45 minutes long and carries equal weighting. At the end of Year 10 students will sit an end of year Test incorporating all the topics learned in year 10. There will be Mock examination in December for the year 11s. Following the mock exam in December year 11 students will be tested fortnightly starting in January to track their progress over time.

How to support your childs’ learning at home

  • Your son should be doing a minimum of 4 X 45 minutes revision per week
  • Encourage him to practice mental maths regularly and to learn number facts
  • Check your son’s homework regularly ensuring it is completed to a good standard
  • Draw up a revision timetable with your son that he uses to revise regularly
  • In order to cope successfully pupils need to bring a ruler, pencil, pens (black/blue, red and green), compass, protractor, eraser, sharpener and their own scientific calculator to all lessons (all equipments can be purchased from the schools main office)
