Curriculum overview

Design and Technology encourages students to become independent and creative thinkers through using a variety of materials.

Design and Technology is a subject that students enjoy and can relate to modern everyday life.

Students will learn skills in Food, Textiles and Product Design.

Students must study at least one aspect of Design and Technology at KS3.

At KS4 students can select one of the Design and Technology subjects to study for GCSE.

We also offer AS Level and A Level Textiles and Product Design.

Design and Technology is a multi-billion pound business and provides the country with many jobs.

Students who study Design and Technology can go on to become Architects, Engineers, Product Designers, Industrial Designers, Fashion Designers, Automotive Designers, Chefs, Graphic Designers and Computer Games Designers to name but a few.

Aims

Students will learn skills that they can transfer to everyday life.  Design and Technology is a subject that can be studied at University and the courses we offer at St Mary’s provide students with a good foundation for further study.

Studenst will learn to analyse existing products and develop ideas of their own.

Students will develop designing skills adn become independent creative learners.

This subject offers students the opportunity to look outside of school and develop their own tastes and opinions.

Design and Technology teaches students to become informed consumers and take responsibility for the environment.

KS3:

Year 7 – Topics Taught

Product Design – Animal Snappers

Food: TBC

Year 8 – Topics Taught

Product Design - Windchimes

Food: TBC

Textiles: TBC

Year 9 – Topics Taught

Product design – Birdhouses and/or decorative box

Food – Baking skills and decorative cakes

Textiles -

Method of Assessment at KS3:

N/C Levels and grades based on folder work and practical tasks.

Product Design projects are marked out of 100% and graded and levelled accordingly.

KS4 – Product Design:

Year 10 – Topics Taught

3 projects;

  1. Stool or Tool Box
  2. Maze or Charity Box
  3. Amplifier and box

Method of Assessment at KS4 (include Exam boards and weightings)

All Designand Technology subjects are AQA and currently 60% controlled Assessment and 40% Exam

KS5 – Product Design (3D Design):

Year 12 – Topics Taught

  • Mini Project
  • Final Project
  • Theory – materials and components.

Year 13 – Topics Taught

  • Major Project
  • Theory

Method of Assessment at KS5 (include Exam boards and weightings)

AQA – 50% Exam and 50% Controlled Assessment
